Poland to become European hub for K2 tank production, S. Korean media report
South Korean defense company Hyundai Rotem plans to make Poland the European center for K2 tank production, according to reports. The move is expected to speed up exports and follows agreements signed between Warsaw and Seoul on tank deliveries, the South Korean Hankyoreh news website reported on Thursday.
According to the company, the second executive contract with Poland, worth $6.5 billion, covers not only the supply of 180 K2 tanks, including the first 64 in the K2PL configuration, but also technology transfer and local production.
The tanks are intended to replace hundreds of older T-72 tanks transferred to Ukraine between 2022 and 2023 to help it fight Russia. While the first three units will be manufactured in South Korea, subsequent machines will be assembled in Poland by Bumar, a subsidiary of the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ). The initiative paves the way for the K2 to become the Polish army’s main battle tank. Hyundai Rotem said the deal would allow Poland to secure production capacity and ensure operational continuity of its armed forces. Poland could also serve as a base for further K2 exports to Europe and other regions. The Polish version of the tank is expected to be fitted with additional systems such as active protection and anti-drone technologies, as well as interior modifications adapted to the needs of Polish soldiers. Hyundai Rotem currently cooperates with more than 700 direct defense suppliers, achieving a domestic K2 production rate of around 90%, according to South Korea’s MoneyS news website.
